Your local experts in Australian travel
We are owner-operators Kris Whitnall and Andrew Lawson. Our family business is based in our home town, the fabulous city of Melbourne.
With its friendly people, temperate climate, rugged outback and cosmopolitan cities, Australia is an amazing place to visit. But it’s also a huge country with a wide variety of accommodation, transportation and sightseeing options.
Our dedication to ensuring your experience is second-to-none starts from the moment you make your first enquiry. We offer prompt, detailed and honest advice to help make your decisions easier and allow you to relax in the knowledge you’re in safe hands.
Kris was born in Sydney and grew up in country Victoria before moving to Melbourne. A dedicated traveller with a yearning to experience other cultures, she lived in the UK and Japan before returning to her home country.
She subsequently worked in Australian tourism for 11 years, travelling extensively across the nation’s seven states and two territories – ideal experience for setting up her own boutique Australian travel agency.
Kris is an outdoors girl through and through. She especially loves hiking, camping, bike riding, ecotourism and caring for the environment. She’s also a closet twiticher!
Her favourite place in Australia is Victoria’s Great Ocean Road which runs along the Southern Ocean. “It’s spectacular any time of year, but I especially love it in winter when the humpback whales are on their yearly migration,” she says. “It’s when the guest houses stoke up their log fires – a chance for me to sit back with a glass of Shiraz, and look out to sea. Bliss!”
Andrew was born in Taumarunui, New Zealand, and studied tourism at the Waikato Institute of Technology.
With a hunger for travel and adventure, he started working in the ski fields of his home country. He then went to work in the UK, seizing the opportunity to also explore North America and Europe.
His love affair with Australia began when he moved to Sydney in 1998 to work with the publisher of a travel magazine. He enjoyed many self-driving adventures through ‘the wide brown land’, including the legendary ‘Pacific Drive’ on the coasts of New South Wales and Queensland.
In 2001 he relocated to Melbourne, which has been home ever since.
Andrew’s favourite place in Australia is Queensland’s Fraser Island. “It’s the world’s largest sand island – over 80 miles long – but it has the most amazing array of natural ecosystems. I was lucky enough to explore it on a 4WD adventure tour. I remember one minute we were driving through rainforest, next minute we were on a beach ‘highway’, then we were swimming in crystal clear Lake McKenzie surrounded by the pure white sands. At every turn, I never knew what was coming next!”
Kris and Andrew’s son Tom is aged 3½ and loves to travel with his mum and dad. To date, he’s had adventures in Perth, the Grampians and Sydney – and proves himself a useful member of Inside Australia Travel because he’s happy to share what works well for kids of his age…
His favourite place in Australia is Summerland Beach on Phillip Island where he got to see the nightly ‘Penguin Parade’.
According to Kris: “Outside of Christmas, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so excited! Being on the beach after dark was a treat in itself. But when dozens of penguins began to emerge from the water, waddling up the beach after a day of fishing, he was beside himself!”
Tom would like to be a penguin when he grows up.
