Whether you’re looking for beachside bliss, a foodie's dream escape, or a dose of adventure, Australia’s cities have something unique to offer. Here’s a round-up of some top city breaks for a long weekend, a quick getaway, or an addition to a much longer vacation - each packed with unmissable sights and carefully curated tours that’ll make your trip unforgettable!
Cairns is known for being the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, making it an ideal city break for anyone craving sun, sea, and adventure. With the Cairns Downtime tour, you get a taste of everything North Queensland has to offer: From exploring lush rainforests to snorkelling above coral reefs. Here’s a brief outline of what this tour itinerary includes!
On arrival into Cairns, you’ll be met with a private transfer from the airport to your accommodation of choice. We recommend Oaks Cairns Hotel, but our team of Aussie Travel Specialists are always happy to provide you with recommendations on the best places to stay. Your first couple of days in Cairns will see you free to relax and explore the city, visit local attractions, or indulge in some shopping.
If you’d rather stack up your days full of activities, or are simply looking for recommendations, then we highly recommend checking out the Bungy Jump with Skypark Cairns by AJ Hackett. Take a leap into the heart of the rainforest from 50 metres above a deep natural lagoon. This is sure to get your adrenaline fix! Afterward, why not treat yourself to a Spirit of Cairns Dinner Cruise - the perfect way to end a perfect day in paradise. This cruise sees you sailing a catamaran along the coast as you enjoy an evening feasting on delicious seafood.
Day three will see you leaving the city and exploring the famous Great Barrier Reef with a Frankland Islands Reef Cruise. You’ll be comfortably transported through scenic landscapes as you enjoy a calm river cruise down the Mulgrave River, followed by a short boat ride to Normanby Island. Once there, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the island with activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, guided island walks, and a buffet lunch!
The next day, after enjoying a day island hopping, venture out to the ‘village in the rainforest’ with a Kuranda Scenic Railway experience! Your day begins in Cairns as you board the train for a morning departure, travel through unsurpassed views of rainforests and waterfalls, including Stoney Creek Falls and the breathtaking Barron Gorge. Once you arrive at Kuranda Village, you’ll have several hours to explore the village and visit the Rain forestation Nature Park. There’s plenty of guided tours to immerse yourself in, or simply take the day at your own pace! Once you’ve concluded your visit, the train will take you back to Cairns to enjoy another evening at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.
On your last day of the trip, catch a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the incredible Queensland coastline. Your guide will have you experiencing some of the best sights in Cairns from a new perspective, and provide you with information about where you are and the history of the land. Once you land, it’s time for your private transfer to the airport, where you will conclude your unforgettable experience.
It’s no secret that we’re a fan of Tasmania (If you’ve read any of our other blogs, you’ll get the hint!), especially Hobart - Tasmania’s capital, and one of the coolest cities in Australia. Not only is Hobart brimming with things to do, there’s just so much to see and do in Tasmania in general that it’s the perfect place for a quick getaway, or addition to your Australian tour. The Great Hobart Escape tour lets you dive into the city’s vibrant arts scene, take in breathtaking scenery, and savour top-notch cuisine all in just a few days!
Once you arrive in Hobart, you’ll be checking into your hotel of choice, or our recommended hotel - Vibe Hotel Hobart, situated in the heart of the city. Your first day will see you taking Hobart in at your own pace. Explore the city and its surroundings, stop by some cafes or bars, or if you’re after a more guided approach - take a guided walking tour with Hobart Historic Walking Tour. Discover Hobart by foot and hear the fascinating stories of how Tasmania’s capital city was established, and how it grew to become the vibrant waterfront city it is today.
After exploring Hobart, your second day will see you venturing out to the famous Bruny Island - an island just off the coast of Hobart that’s home to some of the best views in Australia! Experience the best of Bruny Island with the Bruny Island Traveller Full Day Tour with Pennicott Journeys, a day field with exquisite tastes, breathtaking views, and unique wildlife encounters. You’ll also treat your tastebuds to an exclusive tasting at the renowned Bruny Island Cheese & Beer Co., where locally crafted delights are paired perfectly with the island’s rustic charm.
If you’re a lover of all things art and culture, you’re in for a treat with your next few days! Day three will see you experience one of Australia’s most incredible art galleries - Mona Museum of Old and New Art. Mona is Australia’s largest privately-owned gallery and museum, showcasing the diverse collection of its owner, Tasmanian gambler and maths nerd David Walsh. Mona’s exhibition changes regularly, but it can include everything from modernist masterpieces, to evocative classic art and history. It’s truly an incredible experience that will open your mind to all sorts of curiosities! You can also indulge at the sites Moorilla Winery, The Source restaurant, and Tasmania’s biggest craft brewery, Moo Brew.
Your last day in Hobart will see you experiencing one of Hobart’s best markets - the Salamanca Markets. This is arguably one of Hobart’s, and Tasmania’s visited attractions. Operating each Saturday, the market runs the length of Hobart’s historic Salamanca Place. You can find a selection of tasty locally made products and meet the makers, artisans, and designers. The markets host over 300 stallholders and includes fresh produce, incredible food options, and a host of gift ideas and handmade products. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture before heading off to depart from this beautiful city.
Melbourne has long held the title of Australia’s cultural capital, and the Melbourne Escape Tour lets you experience the best of Melbourne, from buzzing laneways to art galleries. Melbourne is known locally for its incredibly good coffee (seriously), eclectic street art such as Hosier Lane, and a cosmopolitan vibe that’s next to none in Australia. I haven’t even touched on the massive range of restaurants and sights to see in Melbourne. You could spend a month in the CBD alone STILL not have visited all the best restaurants and cafes on offer. If you’re after a city break that has it all, then Melbourne should be at the top of your list!
Welcome to Melbourne! You’ll be staying in the heart of the city at Melbourne Docklands, where you’ll have easy access to Melbourne's tram network as well as be within walking distance to a huge range of restaurants, cafes, and activities! Day one will see you settling into your accommodation, familiarising yourself with the city, and starting your first steps into exploring. Whilst we’re all for you exploring the city at your own pace, our Aussie Travel Specialists recommend checking out the Melbourne Skydeck - Melbourne’s highest viewing attraction. Here, you can sip a cocktail at Bar 88 whilst you experience 360 degree panoramic views all day and night. It’s a great introduction to the city and it’s also located just near your hotel! Your second day here in Melbourne will be a full day to explore the city at your leisure, as well as taking a complete Melbourne Walking Tour with Depot Adventures! This guided tour is meant to tell the whole story of Melbourine. Learn everything from Melbourne’s humble beginnings to the Gold Rush era that changed everything, to the world’s coffee capital and street art.
From here, pick up a rental car included in your tour and begin your adventure to greater Melbourne! First up is Mornington Peninsula - a beautiful coastal suburb just over an hour south of Melbourne. This beautifully quaint beachfront suburb is home to some of Victoria’s best beaches, as well as featuring the iconic Port Phillip Bay beachfront cabins! With a range of things to do from wineries, stunning gardens, scuba diving, and a scenic gondola ride, your day will be jam packed with adventure!
Day four is when you set off for Phillip Island, just off the coast of Melbourne's Western Port Bay. Grab a coffee in Hastings - a historic fishing village with a stunning beach before driving across to Phillip Island and its idyllic beaches, delicious food & wine, and unique wildlife. Whilst you’re here, check out the Koala conservation with Phillip Island Nature Parks where you can cross tree-top boardwalks to watch koalas up close in their natural habitat. If you come at the right time of year, you can also experience one of the largest penguin colonies in the world at Summerland Beach!
Perth, Australia’s less talked about city, is probably one of its best cities. We’re big fans of Western Australia (WA) as a whole, and it’s no surprise that Perth made this list. Almost the opposite to Tasmania, WA is huge! You could spend a whole month travelling WA and still only scratch the surface. But, if you’re looking for a city break that offers a relaxed vibe, stunning beaches, and a laid back culture then there’s nowhere better. Perth is the ultimate destination for those looking for a mix of urban flair and beachside relaxation. With the Perth Short Break Package, you’ll get a taste of both worlds, from city exploration to wildlife encounters on Rottnest Island.
Perth sits on the west coast and is Australia’s sunniest capital city. Due to its relative distance from the rest of Australia, Perth has a fairly unique culture that’s distinct from other cities. It’s a more laid back city, with a much deeper connection to the aboriginal population that call it home. When you arrive in Perth, your first few days will be spent exploring the city and its harbour Fremantle. There’s plenty of guided tours you can take such as Perth and Kings Park Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour. If true crime is your thing, you definitely don’t want to miss the True Crime Tour with Fremantle Prison.
Depart from Perth and head across to Rottnest Island - Western Australia’s most famous island! Rottnest Island offers visitors a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery, and a rich cultural heritage to discover. The waters in Rottnest Island are immaculate, and the beaches are just as fantastic. You’ll also get the chance to experience the Quokka, Rottnest Island’s very own local marsupial! These cute little creatures are world-famous celebrities, exploding on social media for their fondness of posing for photos - often seen smiling. You can definitely expect to run into these little fellas as you go about exploring the various swimming spots and sights to see.
For something completely different, our Aussie Travel Specialists suggested including a Red Centre Highlights tour. This tour isn’t a city break like the previous ones, and is instead a tour to Australia’s heartland, the Red Centre. From the surreal landscapes to rich Aboriginal culture, this is a weekend break like no other that deserves to be on the list of the best city breaks in Australia. This is quite literally a “break from the city” and an incredibly immersive trip into the heart of Australia. If you’re wanting a break from the hustle and bustle, then this tour is for you!
Arrive at Ayers Rock Airport and enjoy a leisurely drive to Kata Tjuta for one of our favourite sunset experiences in Central Australia! Along the way, your guide will dive into the geological and cultural history of the area. Once you arrive at your accommodation at the Outback Hotel & Lodge, relax with canapes and Australian wines while you take in the magnificent sunset over Kata Tjuta. It’s an awe-inspiring experience that simply can’t be beaten.
On day two, travel to Kings Canyon with your guided tour exploring Kings Creek Station - the largest exporter of wild camels in Australia. Here you’ll get the chance to experience a camel ride through the desert before making your way to Kings Canyon and Watarrka National Park. Here you can experience the ‘Garden of Eden’ and the stunning ecosystem that thrives in the Red Centre. It’s an eye opening experience that is sure to leave an impression.
Day three starts with an early rise to travel to Talinguru Nyakunytjaku, the Uluru sunrise viewing area. Watch the first rays of sun light up the desert while enjoying a warming cup of coffee. Afterwards, visit Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park and dive deep into Aboriginal culture and stories. Explore the Dream Time as you undergo a guided tour around Uluru, led by an indigenous aboriginal to guide you through the stories of their people. It’s a magical experience next to none, and one that you simply can’t miss when visiting Australia. The next morning, you simply HAVE to visit the Field of Light sunrise attraction by renowned artist Bruce Munro. It’s a see it to believe it experience as you witness thousands of lights light up the desert landscape as the sun rises. It’s the best way to send off your experience into the heart of Australia.
Whether you’re after art and coffee in Melbourne, coastal vibes in Perth, or the natural wonders of the Red Centre, Australia’s cities offer a fantastic range of short breaks with plenty to see and do. Each city has its own flavour, making it easy to find something that’ll suit your travel style. These tours make it easy to dive right in and experience the best bits without any fuss. So go on, book your next Aussie adventure—there’s a world of discoveries just a weekend away!
