Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is a small town situated approximately halfway between Adelaide and Alice Springs in South Australia. The origin of the town’s name is believed to be an English adaptation of the Aboriginal term “kupa-piti”, which means “white man in a hole,” in reference to the opal mining efforts in the area. Coober Pedy is known as the opal capital of Australia, supplying most of the world’s gem-quality opals. If that weren’t interesting enough, Coober Pedy is also known for its very distinctive way of living; the town is built in one of the hottest climates in Australia, and the lunar sun-baked landscape is devoid of any trees or vegetation. The climate is so hot that many residents choose to live in underground dwellings called dugouts to escape the heat, which is what makes the region so unique and famous. Descend beneath the earth’s surface to visit and explore truly unique underground homes, cafes, churches, shops, and hotels.
